Bakasana
I went to a Power Yoga 2-3 class last night, a bit scary. I got my Christmas present a bit early last week, a lovely yoga mat that is extra long for tall internet sensations. So I snuck in, found a spot at the back, rolled it out and prepared to fall over a lot.
But I actually held my own! I pretty much only really like the really hard classes, if you’re going to go to a class, why not do one that pushes you farther than you ever would on your own?
I totally kept up with the teacher Jess’s pace! She had an ethereal voice that sounded so soothing and even seductive while she dropped all kinds of pain on me. Pretty soon on, I gave up complaining to myself and just surrendered. An hour and 15 minutes later, Jess drops “oh and do 15 pushups if you want on your way back to downward dog. My brain said “aw hell no!” my muscles burning, energy spent. My body just went ahead and did them anyway, with me looking on wondering where the hell I got that burst of energy from.
Then Jess says “Yoga freestyle!” which had me laughing, she said to do anything you’re working on. Well I want to stand on my hands, in all sorts of ways and the first step on my road is Bakanasa, or crow pose. Twice a week I had tried and failed to get anywhere close, I could just about lift one leg off the ground but that felt miles away from balancing them on my elbows.
So at the end of this most intense but cleansing session, I lined up in my own little endorphin world, hands at the edge of the mat, arms bending a little and my knees resting on my elbows.
I shifted my weight forward and… both legs lifted off the ground. I managed to hold about 3 breaths before falling over with an ear to ear grin on my face. I had just done (for a few shaky seconds) what I had thought the day after Labor Day to be probably impossible. I just lay there giggling to myself then rolled over and had a lovely nap, I mean Shivasana.
You can do anything, if only you get out of the way of yourself.
peace and christmas blessings to you.
